Yellow Bus Meal Delivery: Love as it Was Intended

A red rose on a cardboard box

GUEST BLOGGER KIM OBER ULLOM

Yellow bus meal delivery----it's actually more than that.

It's building relationships with the folks we work beside.

It's telling stories and laughing til our sides hurt.

It's listening as a fellow teacher becomes the cheerleader through the open bus windows, encouraging each child as they race to the bus to receive their meals.

It's watching in awe as the driver and the assistant speak with kindness to the family as they approach with ear to ear grins.

But in the end, we get more than we give.

We get the shy smiles and the heartfelt thank you’s, or the exuberance of a child as the bus slows to a stop.

We get a perfectly picked rose as one of the youngest gingerly hands it to the assistant's outstretched hand, receiving it in love as it was intended.

This my friends, is schooling, way beyond a classroom.

This is a win-win time of selfless work and we thank you for the opportunity to serve your children.

For this time, this is the best of White Oak and DF Walker Elementary Schools.

Teachers, Instructional Assistants, Clerical Staff, and Bus Drivers Work Together to Deliver Meals to Children

Kim Ober Ullom is a Receptionist at White Oak Elementary School in Edenton, NC. She is a frequent staff volunteer on the bus meal delivery routes.

UPDATE - After arriving back at school, the staff on the bus presented the red rose to the School Cafeteria Manager, bringing tears to her eyes. Love, paid forward, grows as it goes.
