We must walk on... the future is bright!
I attended the 45th Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast in Asheville, NC, with Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Members and teammates. It was announced that the attendance topped 1,000 people. I tremendously enjoyed the program, particularly as the Founder, Dr. Oralene Simmons, was recognized for her efforts to start the Prayer Breakfast 45 years ago. Dr. Simmons was the first black student to attend Mars Hill College/University. She paved the way for countless others.
The Keynote Speaker was Mike Kelly. His remarks were such that I pulled out my pen and began taking notes in my program. He said, “Leadership is about the heart.” In his remarks, he dwelt on purpose, saying that it opens the clenched fist, calls us to something higher, and sets the heart on fire.
I was grateful to be sitting with such an outstanding team. In our shared purpose, we have found Mr. Kelly’s words to be true. May our hearts continue to burn for our students, families, and teammates.
Thank you to all educators for the heart you bring to our work and service, and thank you for the difference you make each day. I am proud to serve alongside you and excited for what lies ahead as we continue to #LeadTheClimb together.
The future is bright. How do I know? I have seen it in the eyes of our young people.
